Fluency
What is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read text accurately and effortlessly, using appropriate expression and phrasing.
Why Is It Important?
It is important because it creates a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. It gives children the ability to read accurately, with expression, and correctly phrase words at an appropriate rate.

Express It!
If a student struggles in expressing text, this remediation would work for them. With this activity, students will be able to read sentences with expression. In doing so, they will practice not reading in a monotone voice, which is something many readers struggle doing. This is a great way also to make reading more fun for the students. Costumes can also be incorporated!
Activity Directions:
1. Place the sentence strips face up in a stack at the center.
2. Working in pairs, student one selects the top sentence strip and reads it silently. Reads the sentence(s) again, this time orally, using proper phrasing, intonation, and expression.
3. Student two then reads the same sentence(s) aloud. If the sentence(s) is read with different phrasing, intonation, or expression, students discuss why.
4. Reverse roles and continue until all sentences are read.
5. Peer evaluation
Tap Stack
If a student struggles in letter recognition, this remediation would work for them. With this activity, students will be able to identify letters while playing a card game. In doing so, they will practice speed accuracy with a partner and also practicing communicating with a partner instead of asking for adult help.
Activity Directions:
1. Place the letter cards face down in a stack. Place the timer at the center. Provide the students with one time record.
2. Working in pairs, student one selects the top card from the stack as the target letter and places it face up on the table. Student two divides the remaining letter cards into two stacks and each student gets one stack.
3. Student one starts the timer and says “begin.” Each student turns over one card, says the letter as quickly as possible, and taps his card if it matches the target letter.
4. If a match is made, places the card below the target letter. If a match is not made, places the card to the side.
5. Play until each student uses all his cards. Student one stops timer and records time on student sheet.
6. Reverse roles and repeat the activity attempting to increase speed and accuracy.
7. Continue until student sheet is complete.
8. Teacher evaluation

Things To Remember:
Advice #1
Use echo reading where you read a printed phrase or sentence and the student repeats it after you and emphasize the expression as well.
Advice #2
Identify poems, songs, and rhymes that are enjoyed by students. Engage in repeated readings or singings.
Advice #3
Read pattern books with the student, stress that the patter should sound like speech. Appropriate expression should also be used.
Advice #4
Praise the student when a word, phrase, or sentence is repeated to correct a miscue and preserve ongoing meaning.
