InTASC Standard

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry,

and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.

Reflection

This standard emphasizes the importance of teachers being knowledgeable in their content areas, so that their students, in turn, are able to master the content as well. I apply this standard to all my teaching because it makes all the learning meaningful to the students. The artifacts chosen below, exemplify how my ability to apply central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of discipline within my classroom. My certification exam scores allowed me to immerse myself in multiple scenarios and apply the content I will be presenting to my class. Among that, this test focused on child development, assessment, core subjects, and more. Along with that, I included my pumpkin life cycle lesson and my penguin unit. Both of these concepts I had to do my own research and make it accessible to my students.

Pumpkin Lifecycle Lesson

Objective: The students will be able to learn about the time, continuity, and change of the life cycle of a pumpkin by completing a scholastic article and applying knowledge. Using the knowledge of the life cycles of pumpkins, students will create their own pumpkin with the life cycle.

As an educator, I had to do my own research to make this lesson accessible to students.

Penguin Lifecycle Unit

Objective: The students will be able to label the basic parts of a penguin by using their penguin diagram, compare different genders, learn the basic lifecycle, view how they are as parents, and finally apply how they are if they were a penguin.

As an educator, I had to do my own research to make this lesson accessible to students. This unit took place over 5 days.
